How to maintain blonde hair

Straw to shine: 7 must-have products for blonde hair over summer

For soft, bouncy locks

For those with blonde hair, keeping up the maintenance can sometimes be a bit of a slog. Compared to darker hair, it can be more delicate meaning it requires a little extra TLC to keep it looking fresh, smooth and at its best. Throw in the harsh environment factors of summertime in Australia and suddenly it’s a little more than your regular shampoo and conditioner.

To help you keep your hair glossy and healthy during the Aussie summer, Women’s Health spoke to Jaye Edwards, hair colour expert and founder of EdwardsAndCo. Here he talks through how to protect hair from the sun, the ocean, and his best products for blonde hair.

Why does my blonde hair fade?

According to Jaye, our harsh UV rays, especially the ones we see during our hot summers can dry out hair, weaken strands and fade colour. This is especially apparent in chemically treated or coloured hair. Over time, sun exposure can lead to brittleness and split ends, leaving hair looking dull and lifeless.

Salt ocean water and chlorine from swimming pools can also dry out blond hair fast. It strips the hair of natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle.

“It also interacts with coloured hair, often resulting in discolouration—especially for blondes, who may notice green or brassy tones,” Jaye adds.

How do I keep my blonde hair from fading?

One of the biggest things you can do to keep your hair from fading is taking the steps to carefully protect it! Alongside products such as UV sprays and nourishing hair masks, it’s also important to wear a hat when you’re outdoors or seek shade where you can.

UV rays can drain the colour from your hair, leaving blondes looking brassy or washed out. Using UV-protective products in conjunction with physical barriers, like a chic hat on beach days will help shield your blonde from the sun’s harmful effects,” Jaye shares.

How do I keep my hair blonde on holiday?

When you’re on a beach holiday or dealing with the summer heat, humidity can cause frizz, swelling, and lack of control in your hair, as it attracts water to the hair shaft. For some hair types, it can also flatten out volume and style. Increased time in the ocean or pool water can also be detrimental to your blonde hair.

Apply a pre-swim protection treatment before hitting the pool. When you’re home, follow it up with a hydrating hair mask or leave-in conditioners.

“This will help keep hair soft, manageable and shiny, reversing any physical damage caused to the cuticle,” Jaye explains.
