Say “Om” With Peloton’s Latest Meditation Series

As the stress of the holiday ramps up, Peloton is here with meditation classes that will see you destress and relax as you reset ahead of 2022.

Even if you weren’t aware of the fact that it’s now December and the festive period is upon us, the sound of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” ringing out from every department store is enough to suggest that now is the time for pairing off, draining the bank account on gifts that will likely be refunded or exchanged, and stocking the fridge with all manner of festive treats. If there’s one thing we know from the various end-of-year holidays we’ve lived through, it’s that despite this being a time to take stock of the year that’s passed and those people and experiences that have come to shape it, more often than not various stressors arise that come to cloud all sense of enjoyment.

While stress over the Christmas period is to be expected, the fact remains that for many of us, the New Year is an opportunity to prioritise our health and start the year with intention. We want to start how we wish to continue and when office Christmas parties and family get-togethers drain the life out of us quicker than Snapchat to an iPhone battery, it’s fair to say that the energy required for such forward momentum can be lacking. It makes the announcement of Peloton’s new meditation series an exciting one, with the beloved fitness platform bringing a sense of calm to its 6.2 million members worldwide.

In an effort to reset ahead of 2022 and relax during the holiday period, Peloton’s new series lays the groundwork for a lifetime of good mental health by showing its users how to relax, de-stress and refocus. Now, more than ever, we know the importance of mental health and the need to make it a priority. For those new to meditation or who simply haven’t given it a go, Peloton’s series presents an incredible opportunity to learn the skills and tools required to make meditation an integral part of your daily routine.

The classes offer a variety of different approaches, including breath work, gratitude practice and sleep meditation. Available in three different languages, the classes are led by Peloton instructors including Australia’s own Kirra Michel. We spoke with Kirra about the importance of meditation, the role of mantras during practice and how such mantras can shift not only our focus, but our mindset in any challenge that life throws at us.

What does meditation mean to you?

Meditation helps to keep me grounded and present with what is, rather than being caught in the emotions of the past or future. It helps me notice the narratives that run through the mind for what they are rather than being emotionally dragged around by them. Meditation is a training to redirect myself from my mind, into my heart and breath, gaining a deeper understanding of the self.

What is the role of mantras during meditation?

There is energy in sound and power in words, so repeating a mantra (a sound vibration) has the ability to alter the patterns of the mind and help focus, allowing ourselves to stay connected to the present.

What are your three ‘go to’ meditation mantras?

‘Just this breath’, ‘Om’ and ‘So Hum’.

Should mantras only be used during meditation?

Mantra is not only designated for a formal meditation practice. I encourage people to use mantras (similar to affirmations) throughout the day to help retrain the patterns of the mind to become more positive, loving, focused etc.

Have your mantras changed since you joined Peloton?

No, the same mantras still apply. They are simple and keep me grounded. Sometimes it’s best to not overcomplicate things.

What makes Peloton meditation different to others in the market?

Peloton makes meditation accessible, personal and approachable to thousands of people who may have been hesitant to try it previously, in the comfort of their own homes. Our teachers come from different backgrounds, histories and beliefs which makes finding a teacher who you resonate with a little easier, plus we now offer meditation in English, Spanish and German!
