Firstly, I want to highlight that living a healthy life begins with balance. This is the foundation of everything. It all began over a decade ago with the core JSHealth philosophy: embracing a lifestyle that truly nourishes you from the inside out.
Now, let’s talk about a concept that often gets misinterpreted: the “cleanse.” Instead, I prefer the term “reset.” This certainly doesn’t involve juice fasts or fad diets. In fact, those approaches can actually do more harm than good.
It’s time to rethink detoxification and cleansing, and come back to what these should really be about – support the natural processes our bodies work hard to do every single day! Join me in waving goodbye to a restrictive mindset.
Life should be a celebration of flavour and variety – joy is a nutrient, too.
What is a reset?
So, what is a true reset? It is about holistic renewal, for both the body and mind. It’s making conscious choices to nourish yourself with the right foods and nutrients. When you do this, you naturally feel energised, refreshed and ready to take on the day.
One of the hardest-working organs in this process of revitalisation is your liver. As the body’s primary detox organ, it is constantly filtering toxins, heavy metals and hormones. When these build up in the system due to an unbalanced diet or stress, this can lead to a range of symptoms including fatigue, irritability and brain fog.
A guide to resetting your liver
If you feel like you could hit refresh on your current state of wellbeing, my 6 easy steps to a gentle and effective liver reset is here to support you.
You’ll see how effective these mindful, gentle ways to cleanse are.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Start your day with warm lemon water. The sunshine-coloured citrus helps flush your liver and kick start digestion. Aim for 2-3 litres of water daily, or try herbal teas throughout the day!
- Increase brassica vegetables: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage are superstar liver supporters. I’ve love them in a salad with other liver-friendly ingredients, antioxidants and healthy fats, all drizzled with a flavour-packed dressing.
- Green up your routine: Greens are nature’s vitamin powerhouses! Including a green juice in your daily ritual is a wonderful way to infuse your system with a hit of vitamins and nutrients. I love making my own at home using kale, spinach, lemon, ginger and green apple. If you’re picking one up, try to find a juice bar that fresh presses their juice with organic ingredients.
- Limit liver loaders: To lighten the burden on your liver, reduce your intake of alcohol, coffee, processed foods and refined sugar. Prioritise nourishing whole foods that are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
- Rest and recharge: Big meals before sleep can often leave you feeling sluggish, but there’s a good reason to get your well-deserved rest. This is the time for the body to detox and deeply repair itself after a busy day! Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Looking for a deeper dive into restful sleep? - Supplement for extra support: Consider targeted supplements containing ingredients like turmeric for liver health and milk thistle to support natural detoxification and cleansing processes, under the guidance of a health professional.
The bottom line: a true cleanse in line with living the healthy life is about embracing balance and nourishment, without restriction – and this extends to your liver!
Remember, your body is an incredible system designed to work for you, not against you. Sometimes it just needs a little extra nurturing love and care.
