Expensive brunette is the hair trend to try in 2024

Contrary to the name, 'expensive brunette' is surprisingly low-maintenance.

The jury is still out on  whether blondes or brunettes have more fun, but what we do know is that brunettes traditionally haven’t had a lot of options when it comes to shades and hair colouring. A sad truth: If you’re keen to stick to your darker tresses, it can be hard to slightly pivot the ship. Until now. Because there’s a new trend that’s hitting the world of manes, and it’s called ‘expensive brunette’.

And not in the I’ll-take-all-your-money-and-run kinda way.

What is expensive brunette?

Expensive brunette is darker hair with depth of colour. It’s multi-dimensional colour, so think the total opposite of box dye. Instead it’s lived-in and luxurious with warm, rich tones and impressive shine.

Amanda Magistro, owner of Salon Alm, describes it as, “perfect for those wanting to embrace their natural brunette or for those transitioning back from lighter hair. And as we are seeing with international celebrities expensive brunette works summer or winter.” Amen to trans-seasonal looks that don’t require a huge amount of upkeep.

And celebrities are flaunting the trend. Magistro gave her thoughts, and how you can recreate the looks at home.

Kaia Gerber

Kaia has just debuted even darker, chocolatey hair. I’ts long, healthy and deep brown. Before this darker turn, Kaia absolutely slayed at the Met Gala with her chestnut mane. When you hear chestnut, imagine an auburn warmth that really speaks when the light hits.

For polished locks, use an at home treatment 1-2 times a week I love the Kerasilk Recovery Mask & Goldwell Rich Repair 60 Second Treatment, anything that only takes a minute is a win from me.

Bella Hadid

The Holy Grail of “expensive brunette” is Bella Hadid, it’s the solid colour from roots to ends without dimension, but high gloss throughout. Look for at-home products that protect the colour, and increase shine. So we’re talking colour sealers and serums.

Rita Ora

The once extra-warm blonde, has us now drooling over her hazelnut crème tones. Creating a high dimensional brunette. Rita is passionate about healthy hair too, she’s just launched her own hair care line.

We’re seeing her with a glam, old money blow wave. The Oribe Royal Blowout Spray is perfect for this polished look.

Zendaya

Zendaya’s hair is the epitome of chic with chocolate boobed look. And it’s not any chocolate here, it’s the Swiss kind. This is the shade that Zendaya is absolutely nailing at the moment especially with the length it’s at. I’m loving the fun she is having with her hair, plus so many additional hair looks on her recent press tour.

You’ll want to keep texture like Zendaya’s frizz-free, look for smoothing and anti-humidity hair care.

Nicola Peltz

Showing all signs of $$$ brunette her look is one with a slight graduation. Cooler through the roots and softening out on the mid lengths and ends. This works so well on Nicola as her brows and facial features are definitely cooler tones.

Her gloss and shine is perfection. Add some brilliance with Goldwell StyleSign Shine Spray.
