The hardest part of committing to a consistent workout routine isn’t the workouts, it’s staying committed. It’s fairly easy to set goals and dip your toe into a new lifestyle, but the real challenge is sticking to it for the long term – which is why so many new year’s resolutions are abandoned.
For David and Victoria Beckham – who have now both entered their fifties while maintaining fit and youthful appearances – the key to staying consistent is working out together.
David’s approach to fitness
David was on the cover of Men’s Health in February, where he discussed his experience of entering his sixth decade and how he manages to stay in shape more than 10 years after he retired from professional football.
According to David, the key to staying committed to a workout routine is exercising as a couple. “I love training with Victoria,” David said. “In all honesty, from the moment I start to the moment I finish, I enjoy it. And I think that’s really important in workouts.”
“This morning, we were very romantic, we had a little bit of Bobby Brown. Quite a romantic workout this morning.” David continued. “I stay motivated because my wife keeps me motivated.”
How the Beckhams train
The Beckhams utilise former Olympic judoka Bobby Rich as their personal trainer. While Victoria was initially hesitant, the couple are now in the gym almost every day of the week. “I’ve been trying to get Victoria to work out with Bob for years and she finally agreed,” David explained. “We now do five days a week, sometimes six, together.”
“We give each other plenty of grief,” he continued. “She’s not very good at listening to Bob. Well, she’s good at listening, then she does her own thing. She’s not great at resting. He’ll give her a 90-second rest and she’ll be ready to go after 25. But when it’s good in the gym and we’re both in a good mood, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Victoria’s approach to fitness
David also revealed that Victoria’s sessions begin with 30 minutes on the StairMaster or VersaClimber, before they both train for an hour with Bobby.
Victoria started her current training routine back in 2023, making the switch from a cardio-heavy schedule to one focused on weightlifting and strength training.
“It was becoming apparent to her that the benefits from her own training routines had become minimal,” Bobby Rich told Women’s Health UK at the time. “Despite spending daily 90+ minute sessions in the gym she was purely maintaining her fitness levels rather than improving in other meaningful ways. She was ready for a change.”
The takeaway here? Shaking up your routine can be very worthwhile. And, as we always say, don’t be afraid of weights!
