If you’ve been anything like us and find yourself on a daily scroll, you’d be all too familiar with the magic that is BeautyTok. From trending effects that will give us the perfect brow shape to everyone’s favourite #lazygirlroutine, TikTok beauty trends have made their way into the mainstream and we’re not mad about it.
Women’s Health spoke to Shinta Huynh, a product and formulations developer specialising in skincare, cosmetics and hair care about the biggest viral TikTok trends we’re seeing in 2024 and what you need to achieve the perfect look.
What are the biggest beauty trends on TikTok in 2024?
#LazyGirlRoutine
As Shinta explains, #LazyGirlRoutine is all about streamlining your life. Not overcomplicating things and keeping things simple when it comes to getting ready for the day or winding down after a busy day at school or work has given life to this “lazy girl” movement.
“From lazy girl hair, makeup, and skincare, it’s all about saving time and using effective products.” she says.
On top of Shinta’s #LazyGirlRoutine look is the iconic Laneige Sleep Mask. The OG of sleep masks, it has gained cult status both off and online since its debut in 2003.
“The brand has reformulated the mask five times. My top pick from the collection is the Bouncy & Firm version. It features key ingredients like collagen, which gives skin a juicy appearance, a peptide complex for firming, and lactobacillus, ideal for those with a compromised skin barrier—perfect for restoring skin health.
“Personally, I love sleep masks, especially for those of us who want a simple nighttime product that lets us wake up looking refreshed, as if we’ve had a full 8 hours of sleep,” she says.
The toner pads obsession
Traditionally used for exfoliating the skin, removing makeup residue and excess oil, toner pads had and continue to have a big moment on BeautyTok. These pre-soaked toner-infused one-time-use pads make toner application easy and convenient. Toner pads are also huge in the K-beauty community and in South Korea thanks to its nutrient-rich formulas. As for the best brand? Shinta loves the Mediheal Mediheal Madecassoside Blemish Pad.
“It’s designed to soothe and reduce the appearance of blemishes and dark spots on uneven, post-acne skin. It features the exclusive CalmingTox complex and MEDIHEAL Liposome delivery system for maximum effectiveness. Personally, I love applying these pads and letting them sit on my cheeks or problem areas to help my skin fully absorb the formula,” Shinta shares.
The beauty of blushes
Forget bronzer, blush is a TikTok beauty trend that is here to stay. We’ve seen the likes of the boyfriend blush, ombré blush, no-makeup makeup blush, and even the sunset blush.
“I’ve lost count of how many I’ve bought this year alone. Blush is definitely here to stay. It’s all about that subtle pop of colour to liven up the cheeks,” Shina says.
As for what you should be adding to your cart, Shinta loves the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush.
“It offers a sheer, lightweight wash of colour, while the Huda Beauty Blush Filter gives skin a radiant, healthy glow – another sold-out blush!”
#HairBotox
No, there’s no medical procedure involved in this trend. Despite the name #HairBotox refers to a nutrient-packed conditioning treatment that repairs, smooths, strengthens, and tames frizz.
“The cult-favourite K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Mask is a no-rinse treatment packed with peptides, designed to reverse damage from colouring and styling, leaving your hair stronger and softer by repairing its keratin structure.”
“If glass-like hair is your goal, the viral ColorWow Dream Coat Spray is your go-to. It creates an invisible shield to combat humidity and frizz, leaving hair sleek, silky, and impossibly shiny.”
#SkinSlugging
For those in the know, #SkinSlugging is definitely not a new concept. Big in the K-beauty world, this involves applying a thick layer of petroleum jelly as a final step in your nighttime routine to prevent trans-epidermal water loss. Basically to stop your skin from losing moisture.
“However, you can slug with any occlusive, which simply means any moisturising agent that forms a physical barrier on your skin. A fantastic option is Weleda Skin Food, which is rich and creamy, packed with plant oils, lanolin, and sweet almond oil for a deeply nourishing experience—like a warm, comforting hug for your skin,” Shinta shares.
Slugging is a great way to protect your skin barrier, especially if you’re feeling extra dry from the weather or even the heating or aircon inside. It helps to seal in all the moisture to help you wake up soft, supple and hydrated skin.
