Tragedy has struck Australia’s sporting industry, after rowing athlete Georgia Nesbitt was in a horror cycling crash that has left her in a coma.
The 30-year-old was participating in a road cycling event in Hobart when the accident occurred at Tolosa Park. She was treated at the scene and rushed to hospital, where the eight-time national champion was put into an induced coma.
“Georgia is one of the most-respected athletes in Australian rowing,” said Rowing Australia boss Ian Robson in an official statement.
“The entire rowing family and wider sports community is thinking of Georgia and her family in the wake of this serious accident and offering its ongoing support and assistance to her family.”
The world championship silver medallist – who was part of the national team at 2022’s rowing world titles – is currently in a stable condition after suffering serious injuries in the incident, Rowing Australia has confirmed.
Nesbitt began her rowing career at university, and after many years rowing at an elite level around the country, was this year appointed to the board of Rowing Tasmania this year, after returning to her home state. The qualified solicitor had been a member of the Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre in Penrith until December 2022. She landed a silver medal earlier in the year, racing at World Rowing Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland.
