The A-League Women (formerly known as W-League) 2022/2023 season has officially kicked off! To celebrate the start of the comp, we caught up with Sydney Football Club player, Cortnee Vine.

Sydney FC – football.

What position do you play?

Winger/forward.

How would you describe your role on the team using an analogy?

I’m pretty quick and play on the wing and I’ve often heard commentators use the phrase for wingers “like a hot knife through butter.”

What have been your career highlights so far?

Making my Matildas debut against the Philippines in January this year.

What’s your biggest sporting dream?

To play for my country at the Women’s World Cup in Australia next year.

How did you start playing your sport?

I followed my brother with whatever he did and that meant playing football, basketball and doing athletics.

If you weren’t an athlete, what would you be doing instead?

I’d be an IT technical guru!

What’s a week of training like for you?

We train with Sydney FC on Mondays and Tuesday mornings, then have Wednesday off and train Thursday and Friday nights.

Each session is around 2 hours including pre-hab. I also fit in two extra gym sessions during the week.

What’s your favourite part of training?

When we play 11 v 11 because it’s a game basically and that’s what every player loves.

What’s your least favourite part of training?

The fitness and strength and conditioning stuff is tough.

How do you get into the zone before competing? Do you have any rituals?

I listen to a hard-hitting techno playlist.

What song gets you pumped to train?

Space Raiders by Charlotte De Witte.

What’s your nutrition like? Could you give us an example of a day on a plate when you’re in training mode?

I start with vegemite and cheese on a bagel with a banana and a coffee. Then for lunch, I’ve been having Lite n Easy meals – lots of different ranges. Usually something like a salmon poke bowl for dinner.

What’s your favourite way to spend your day off?

Watching a TV show.

Who do you look up to in the sports world and why?

Lionel Messi – I think he is a legend and the GOAT.

What are your hopes for the future of women in sport?

I hope for more and more women to be able to play sport professionally, and to have more respect and to be equal to their male counterparts.
