Now that Christmas is behind us and 2025 is well underway, it’s easy to feel the pull between wanting to maintain the joyful holiday vibes and diving headfirst into those ambitious new year goals. But here’s the thing—you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. 

Instead of getting caught up in the pressure of grand resolutions or taking on too much, let’s focus on building small, sustainable habits that will keep you energised, inspired, and balanced as we settle into the rhythm of the new year.

How to build small, sustainable fitness habits in 2025

 

Create a simple vision for 2025

No need to have a 20-point plan just yet—keep it simple. What’s one thing you want to achieve next year? It could be to move your body more, feel stronger, or take more time for yourself. 

Write it down, and think about one small action you can take this week to move closer to it. For example, if you want to feel stronger, commit to one short workout before New Year’s. I’ve included a quick workout video you can do at home, no equipment needed—it’s perfect for this time of year when schedules are packed! 

Tip: Start with low-pressure, fun activities. Movement doesn’t have to mean hours in the gym. A dance-off in your living room counts! 

Snack smartly

The festive feasts may be behind us, but the start of a new year often brings its own set of challenges—leftovers, catch-ups with friends, and getting back to routine. Instead of overthinking every bite, focus on balance and nourishing choices to keep your energy up as 2025 kicks into gear. 

Stay hydrated

Even after the holiday season, hydration is key. Keep sipping water throughout the day, and if you’re having celebratory drinks at catch-ups, alternate with sparkling water and a slice of lime. It’ll help you regulate your appetite, stay refreshed, and avoid that dreaded post-indulgence slump. 

Let’s keep things simple, balanced, and enjoyable as we settle into the year ahead! 

Self-care isn’t selfish

The end of the year can be full-on, and we often carry that same energy into January. Give yourself permission to slow down now, take January one step at a time. 

Whether it’s squeezing in a short nap, a bedtime meditation, or a quick stretch, little moments of recovery will help your body recharge. “Something comes from something but nothing comes from nothing”. Every inch pebble counts, we don’t have to be even thinking about milestones at this time of year.  

Try: Take 10 minutes before bed to stretch or try a few breathing exercises. You’ll sleep better and wake up ready to tackle the day. 

Celebrate progress, not perfection

January 1 isn’t the only day you can start working towards your goals—every day is a new opportunity. Focus on progress over perfection, and celebrate even the small wins, like swapping the couch for a quick walk or prepping a healthy meal. 

Bare minimum is better than nothing–sometimes that’s all you have the time or energy for this time of year. 

Remember: It’s about building habits you enjoy so they last all year, not just for the first week of January.
